I am a firm believer that sports psychology sessions should be a collaboration between the athlete and the consultant. I try to build a friendly and trusting relationship with my clients so that we are able to talk openly and I can support them in overcoming any obstacles. Sessions are based around what the athlete wants to discuss and conversations are confidential. I also follow the guidance and guidelines set out by the British Psychological Society (BPS).
I often find that athletes and players have no clear goals for their chosen sport. I can help and support you to chose what is important to you and then we can set SMART goals.
Imagery has been shown to be a useful skill in sport. Many of the top athletes use it to improve their performance and we can work on imagery and visualisation techniques that are suited for you and your sport.
Sometimes an athlete or player can become overwhelmed with emotion. It can be useful to have coping strategies in place to use when this happens. I can support you with creating your own coping strategies that you can use when you need them most.
CBT is an evidence based therapy used to treat issues such as anxiety and depression. It has also been used in sport to improve performance. CBT includes lots of helpful strategies and I often use CBT in my work with athletes and players.
ACT is also a treatment that can help with mental health issues. ACT is also used in sports psychology to support players and athletes. I use ACT because it can support athletes to accept negative thoughts whilst committing to helpful behaviours.
